THE COSMIC WALK
The Cosmic Walk is a unique collection of embroidered tapestries depicting the story of the evolution of the Universe. The project was created by 17 members of the embroidery section of Kopanang Women's Group of South Africa. The women, ranging in age from 21 to 65 years old, produce high quality, vibrantly colored embroidered products including wall hangings, waistcoats, cushion covers, aprons, caftans, journals and church stoles, as well as a wide range of handmade paper products. The sale of their creations goes to help support their communities.
This remarkable project was commissioned by Faithful Fools, an inter-faith organization based in San Francisco, after a staff member saw one of the group?s vibrant wall hangings. The work of creating the 31 hangings began in July 2002 and was completed four months later, in November. Sister Sheila Flynn, Project Coordinator for the Kopanang Women?s Group, organized the basic design ideas, and the Kopanang women planned the overall structure; they then chose which specific embroidery stitches to use in creating the images, using skills learned under Sister Sheila's tutelage. Arts for All Gallery will host a public reception on Thursday, May 6th, 2004, from 5 ? 9 p.m., as part of Turner?s First Thursday downtown Atlanta artswalk. Special guest Sister Sheila Flynn will be present to offer an informal gallery talk for patrons interested in learning more about the Kopanang Women?s Group and their incredible creative endeavors. The closing reception will take place on Thursday, June 3rd, from 5 ? 9 p.m., also part of Turner?s First Thursdays. Admission is free to the public for both receptions. Complimentary refreshments will be provided. |
