Arts for All Gallery presents ?HEREIN LIE BURIED MANY THINGS ? ,? an exhibition of African American textiles presented as part of the National Black Arts Festival.  The exhibition opens Tuesday, June 24th and continues on view through Friday, August 8th, 2003.

Guest Curator for the exhibition Ben Apfelbaum, Director of Exhibitions at Spruill Arts Center, describes the exhibit as a collection of work that ?draws artists primarily from what may be one of the least represented groups within the VSA arts constituency ? elders and senior citizens.?  He goes on to note that ?The assisted living centers, the seniors? clubs, the organizations and community centers of Atlanta?s African American community are filled with traditional artists for whom working in textiles is an old habit ? quilting, sewing, and embroidering at the feet of the generations which came before.?  The exhibit also includes younger practitioners of textile art, providing artists of all ages working within the same traditions a chance know, learn and grow with each other, as well as offering the viewing public an opportunity to appreciate a great living tradition that has produced masterpieces of design and invention, resonating with the historic past throughout the African American community across the country.  The Atlanta area artists featured in the exhibit include:  Tonia Floyd, Marquetta Johnson, Irene Lewis, Annie Smith and ?Queen? Esther Smith.  ?HEREIN LIE BURIED MANY THINGS?? celebrates NBAF and the 100th anniversary of W.E.B. Du Bois? The Souls of Black Folk.
