Institute on Inclusive Instruction in the Arts

Independently, and in partnership with other major arts organizations in Georgia, VSA arts of Georgia provides high-quality professional development opportunities in disability, arts and education for artists, educators, administrators and others who work in arts education and arts residency programs.  All Institute activities, which take place throughout the year, have a very specific focus on accessibility and inclusion for all learners.

Day I

Monday, April 7, 2008 9 AM – 4:30 PM

WELCOME & INTRO    9 – 9:45 AM

SESSION 1     9:45 AM – 12:15 PM
Arts, Education, Inclusion: Bringing the Creative Spirit to Bear on Teaching, Learning, Life!

This core session will be a lively introduction to the foundational principles of the best kinds of learning and how we can promote this through integrating the arts into every aspect of teaching.  The title of this opening session is audacious! It takes on looking at ways to change the world!  But it allows us to begin our two days together by setting the stage for the large and important work in which we are all engaged and to get us thinking in new and expansive ways about moving forward with that work.

LUNCH      12:15 – 1:15 PM
An opportunity to network and engage in discussions with peers and colleagues.

ART MOMENT 1    1:15 – 2:15 PM
Jaehn Clare will lead a simple paper mask-making activity with a creatively challenging "twist".

SESSION 2    2:15 - 3:30 PM
Words and Music
In this workshop we will be using “homemade” and simple folk instruments, chants, rhythm activities and simple songs which can provide creative ways to promote language and literacy skills and to make books come alive for students of all ages and which link language skills with musical activities.  These activities have direct application to all kinds of learning settings. Participants working in other fields or disciplines will see broader applications which illustrate creativity, cooperative learning and innovative improvisation.  There will be particular attention to adaptive strategies for students with learning differences and disabilities.

CLOSING    3:45 – 4:30 PM
Questions & Answers concerning the day's discussions and a closing activity, as well as looking ahead to Day II.

Day II

Tuesday, April 8, 2008 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM

WELCOME    8:30 – 9:00 AM

SESSION 3    9:00 – 10:30 AM
The “Three Cs” of Successful Inclusion: Communication, Choice, Creative Problem Solving

The workshop will examine the critical role of communication, of promoting choice and independence, and of finding creative solutions to meet unique needs and situations.  It addresses the questions “How do we create a dynamic and effective environment that includes every student and promotes progress on individual goals? What obstacles present themselves and what can we do to overcome these?”  These cornerstones of effective learning are critical for all students, but particularly for those with learning differences and disabilities.  With lively discussion, interaction and exchange, as well as practical applications of these concepts we’ll be looking at the best practices for inclusive learning settings and strengthen our abilities to find solutions that really work when we experience that “ OK, what shall I do now?” moment!

Break and Browse     10:30-10:45 AM
An opportunity to explore resources and samples of adaptive tool and instruments.

ART MOMENT 2     11 AM – 12 N
A hands-on participatory art making experience; an adaptive/inclusive lesson plan in action, as an example of how to apply techniques and strategies that are being introduced, illuminated and discussed.

LUNCH     12 N – 1:30 PM
A working lunch: Q & A ... Discussion
What sort of questions and concerns have risen?
What do you still have questions about at this point?
What do you need to know now?

SESSION 4    1:30 – 3:00 PM
What Happens When You Open the Sky? Writing in Inclusive Settings

Linking expressive writing to all learning is an invaluable tool for teachers, teaching artists, and anyone who works with children and young people in virtually any setting. Exercises and writing activities will include poetry, writing from one’s imagination and “writing about real stuff” or journaling.  We will look at  ways that even very young children who are emerging readers/writers as well as children with significant disabilities can participate alongside typical peers in expressing themselves in these ways.

These writing activities will come from a series of three books funded by the DOE and published by VSA arts.  Each participant will receive a set of the books comprising this series, to keep as a resource for their own work in arts education.

CLOSING     3:15 – 4:00 PM
Questions & Answers
Participants will also have an opportunity to assess and evaluate the Institute.
